It’s not a tale usually told, but George Washington didn’t get along real well with his mother. He thought she was too controlling, too dominating, and too unpleasant around him. He always respected her and was honor bound to submit to her wishes.
George’s half-brother, Lawrence, was in the British Royal Navy. When he learned that the navy was looking for some more good men, he notified George. George thought that becoming a midshipman would let him engage in a life of adventure and would become glorious career.
George was only 14 when he approached his mother, Mary, and asked that she let him join the navy like his brother. Mary though about it for a while and at first gave her permission. Then after more thought, she changed her mind and decided that George should not go to sea but should instead stay with her.
We should be grateful that Mary imposed her will on her son in this matter. If not, George would have been fighting for the British in their Navy during the American Revolition.
Remember, mother knows best!
