Martha Washington – Be Cheerful!

Martha-Washington-by-Andrews“I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition.” –Martha Washington, First American First Lady, 1732-1802.

Martha met George Washington one day in late Autumn in 1758. She had been invited to dine at the home of Mr. Richard Chamberlayne, who was also a friend of George. Washington happened to stop by the home of his friend for supper while George was on his was to meet with the Governor in Williamsburg.

George and Martha were introduced at supper. They were enamored with each other and spent the evening getting better acquainted. Martha was a recently widowed wealthy and beautiful mother. She was the loveliest widow in Virginia

George was a military hero having recently saved the lives of hundreds in a bloody battle of the French and Indian War. George was a tall but seemingly reticent but handsome and wealthy plantation owner in his own right. George had never been married, but loved dancing. He was tall, nearly 6’4”. She was short, only coming up to his chest.

They were smitten with each other.

George went the next day to his meeting with the Governor. Then he returned to Mt. Vernon. Several days after their first meeting, George rowed his boat across the Pamunkey River to visit with Martha at her home. At this meeting they became engaged to be married! They were hopelessly in love with each other!

They were married on January 6, 1759. George was 26, Martha was 27. They made the most of their marriage. They were happily married for 40 years. George died December 14, 1799.

Their married years were filled with sadness, joy, trouble, and valor. But as Martha said, she was always determined to be cheerful and happy!
