Usually I really appreciate Bill O’Reilly’s TV production of “Patriots: Legends and Lies.” They are well presented, although I am not a true fan of the stars playing the parts represented, and how my heroes are sometimes portrayed. But then I’m not a movie producer.
Tonight I was a little disappointed. Not so much at what was in the story, but at what was left out. For example when George Washington was finally sworn in at Federal Hall in New York City as the new President of the United States of America. The oath of office was administered with the words required.
It wasn’t so much what was said, or how it was said, as what was left out. I think that’s the most important part. In the show, the oath was the thing and there it ended. And that was how it was demonstrated in the show. That was how the scene ended in the TV show. Everyone left after those words.
But in real life, in actual history, George Washington spontaneously added the words: “ . . . So help me God!” to the administered oath. And then he took the supporters to St. Paul’s Cathedral for sacred services.
That has since become an accepted part of the Presidential oath ever since. I can’t understand why that was left out. It was as if it didn’t happen.
Perhaps we have all become so very much politically correct that we must leave God out of everything. God’s been removed from the schools, he’s been taken out of our history, and I noticed that “In God We Trust” which motto is behind most judges benches, has now been removed from the Federal Courthouse in Phoenix Arizona.
I sometimes wonder if God had decided that since we think we don’t need Him any longer, that He will just stay out of our business! Look at the shape that’s left us in!!
