It’s so great that our Founding Fathers were such learned and wise men that they left us a blueprint for our nation. They warned us that if we would follow their instructions we would be a long enduring and prosperous nation. They had high hopes for us.
But somewhere along the way, we thought we were wiser and more learned than they, and we got off their track. They warned us that the type of government we enjoyed was meant only for a moral and religious people. They solidified their intent in the Northwest Ordinance (which was passed the same year as our U.S. Constitution).
In those laws they assured us that each state should teach religion, character and morality in the schools. But what has happened? We have removed God from our schools and our public square, and even our discourse (except for swearing).
You see, in our government the people are supreme. The people were supposed to be self-governing. It appears from the TV news shows that the people cannot govern themselves any longer, so the legislatures need to promote more and more laws. (In our Constitution there were only 6 considered federal crimes. Now there are more than 50,000 on our books (and the Constitution was never amended to include more crimes—how does that happen?)
It seems to me we would be much better off teaching morality, character, and socially accepted norms, than passing a never ending plethora of new laws. Teach them correct principles and they will govern themselves.
