Founding Fathers and Leadership

Speaking-2My wife has been asking me what I want to do now that I’m retired. The other night I woke up at about 2 or 2:30 with a thought on my mind. It seemed important to me at that time in my groggy condition. So what did I do? I got out of bed, went into my office, found a scrap of paper and a pencil and wrote down my thought.

Then, the next day, I couldn’t find the paper on which I had written my thought. Yes, in between I guess I had cleaned off my desk. But that night, I had that same thought again. This time I wrote in down on the white board in my study. That would get misplaced!

I am now retired as a successful Estate Planning and Business attorney. I practiced for 37 years as a sole attorney at Steven W. Allen, PC, Attorney at Law. My office, of which I was very proud, displayed artwork about the founding of our nation. There were paintings of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, the Committee that composed the authors of the Declaration of Independence, and much more.

I had become a student of American history, especially the original Founding Fathers. Because of speeches I had given to many groups especially of senior citizens, I was asked to write a book to share several of the stories of our founding that many hadn’t heard before. Then came my book “Founding Fathers—Uncommon Heroes”.

What I’m getting at, is in my studies of the great men who established our nation, I am constantly wondering why we don’t use the experience of these people as role models for modern business techniques. They are wonderful examples for us and they left great stories and messages.

Anyway, that’s what I wrote down. “I want to teach about the Founding Fathers as Role Models for Modern Leadership Techniques.” They taught us about perseverance, patience, honesty, persistence, humility, and much, much more.

So I’m available to speak or to teach about these things. The most popular presentation has been “Benjamin Franklin’s 12 Rules of Leadership.” Anyone need a speaker? Contact me at
