Happy Columbus Day! Christopher Columbus and George Washington had many character traits in common. The most remarkable is Perseverance.
Columbus had an idea about reaching the East by sailing West. No one had successfully done that before. He was an expert sailor and mapmaker. He came up with his plan and presented it to the King of Portugal, the King and Queen of Spain—four times, the King of France, and he even sent his brother to England to present his plan.
He was on his way to present his plan once again to the King of France, when he was called back to the Majesties of Spain once again. They had just won their war in Grenada and now his plan sounded better to them. One more presentation and it was granted and approved.
Imagine the perseverance, the persistence, the tenacity, and yes, even the faith in his objective that this all required of Columbus!
George Washington was much the same in character. He managed to hold his troops of farmers, mechanics, and booksellers together for six long years, while they fought against the largest, most well-trained, and fearsome army in the world at the time. Despite all the setbacks, travails, and hunger, they won! The United States of America came into existence.
Imagine the perseverance, the persistence, the tenacity, and yes, even the faith in his objective this required of George Washington. These two are rightfully held in the eyes of most Americans as Heroes and indispensable men!
But both are now being reinvented, torn down, dissembled, and even removed from their status as American Heroes by some of our politically correct lampooners today. Please don’t let it happen. It’s History!
