In a Peanuts comic strip Lucy is at her psychiatrist sidewalk shop with the sign that says: “Psychiatric help 5 cents” and “the doctor is in.” Well, of course, Charlie Brown is once again asking for help. He says: “Everything seems hopeless . . .”
Then he adds: “I’m completely depressed . . .”
So Dr. Lucy gives this advice: “Go home, and eat a jelly-bread sandwich folded over . . . five cents please.”
Charlie Brown leaves. Lucy leans back in her chair, or box, or whatever she is sitting on, she puts her feet up on her table with the sign which says the doctor is in, and then says to herself: “There are some cures you don’t learn in medical school.”
That’s good advice, don’t you think? Eat a jelly-bread sandwich folded over! Mmmm. . .
Benjamin Franklin gave some good advice. It wasn’t a mistake at the time. But perhaps it is now. He suggested starting Daylight Savings Time. We continue with it today, without understanding the reason it was first introduced. You see, Ben’s father was a candle maker. The light was kept shining in the house because of candles. There was no electricity—yet.
Ben thought it a good idea to save daylight by changing the hours in winter, so as to require using fewer candles. It worked. It did what it was supposed to do. People saved candles. However, how many families still get their lights from a candle or two? Not too many.
Daylight Savings Time has outlived its usefulness. Nobody needs to save on candle purchases these days. With modern technology we don’t need the change in times. So why change the time to “Spring forward” and then “fall back”?
Why continue with all the confusion? When do we change the clocks? What if we forget? Why go to the trouble now?
Arizona and a small part of one other state have seen the foolishness of keeping Daylight Savings Time. When will the rest of the nation catch up?
It seems like we should learn something from Lucy. Let’s just forget Daylight Savings Time and go have a jelly-bread sandwich folder over. You don’t have to learn everything from medical school. Just a thought!
