Benjamin Franklin and Pride

Franklin had his own “Project for Moral Perfection.” He strived to become as perfect in a dozen different personal character traits as he could be. He made a list and worked on it his whole life. After a short while one of his friends told Ben he should add another trait to his list. That of humility. And the friend proved the need for improvement in that area by citing several examples.

At least one prophet has suggested that Pride is the sin of this generation. We must all be careful to watch ourselves, and our words and deeds. Pride can be corrosive to character.

C.S. Lewis, an intellectual giant and Christian writer put it this way: “Pride leads to every other vice; it is the complete anti-God state of mind. Does this seem to you exaggerated? If so, think it over. I pointed out a moment ago (in his book “Mere Christianity” ) that the more pride one had, the more one disliked pride in others. In fact if you want to find out how proud you are, the easiest way is to ask yourself ‘How much do I dislike it when other people snub me, or refuse to take notice of me, or shove their oar in, or patronize me, or show off?” (Page 122.)

Wow. I asked myself that question and it hurt! How are you doing?
