President George Washington

I am officially chagrined. Meaning marked by disappointment, annoyed, vexed and irritated. One of my favorite TV talk show hosts treated President’s Day like most uninformed or misinformed students today.
He went around a busy college and showed pictures of several U.S. Presidents and asked the young people if they knew who the person in the picture was.

Of course, most of those asked didn’t have a clue as to which President was pictured. That was to be expected. What I did not expect was that the moderator treated President’s Day as if it were a day to honor any president of your choosing. That wasn’t the idea when the holiday came into being. But that’s what he made it sound like.

As I explained before, the day joined our two best President’s (according to many reviews) birthdays together as one day to celebrate. The idea was to allow another holiday in February to honor civil rights day and in doing so combine those two exceptional men’s birthdays (Feb. 12 and Feb. 20) into one holiday (a long weekend with Monday off) instead of continuing to allow each President to have his birthday honored as before.

So this just shows we have officially lost Abraham Lincoln’s and George Washington’s birthday as distinct celebrations. That’s what I was afraid would happen when this move was first announced, back when I was much younger.

You see, I always enjoyed celebrating Abe’s birthday and then George Washington’s birthday separately and individually. We, as young students, learned about the greatness of these two men. It seemed to give us young students a hero to emulate and learn from. Their characters were above reproach.

I have always tried to keep the tradition of their birthdays and characters alive. I love their history. Look for that character and history in “Founding Fathers—Uncommon Heroes!”
