The Founding Fathers Plan

In the Constitution, the Founding Fathers set out a plan for the ruling of the new nation. That plan included procedures should the leaders be guilty of high crimes or misdemeanors. They could be impeached. Yes, even the Supreme Court Justices were (in theory) subject to this.

Do you recall how it is born out in history? Vice President to Richard Nixon, Sprio Agnew, resigned after bribery allegations were brought against him. Nixon appointed Gerald Ford to become the new Vice President, replacing Agnew.

Richard Nixon himself, resigned after the Watergate scandal, and Gerald Ford became the new, non-elected, President. Ford appointed Nelson Rockefeller to be his Vice President.

Shortly after assuming power as the new President of the United States, Gerald Ford granted Nixon a full pardon for any crimes he may have committed in the Watergate boondoggle.

President Ford then lobbied Congress to pay Nixon, the disgraced President, the sum of $850,000 to cover his expenses and his transition from the White House to civilian life. A compromise was reached and Nixon was given $200,000.

President Ford had considered the sum of $850,000 to be a fair request for Nixon. The Presidential Transition Act of 1963, provides ex-Presidents (after a full completed term) an amount not to exceed $900,000 to pay their expenses during a six month period of transition into civilian life once again.

So some things are taken care of. What foresight!
