Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln

GeorgeWashingtonI have missed creating my Blog ever since the Christmas Holidays at the end of last year. Things got in the way. You know how life can be sometimes!

Here we are just a few days away from ‘”President’s Day”. I just wanted to gear up again about these men for which President’s Day was created and named. I’ll have more to say about these two men.

But I just wanted to clarify something. I have discovered in talking with younger people, that many do not know why we have a President’s Day. Many are of the opinion that on this holiday one can choose to honor whichever U.S. President they wish. It could be Calvin Coolidge, Jimmy Carter, or even Barack Obama.

No. President’s Day was created to honor the two great Presidents who were born in February. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Many believe these are the two greatest Presidents we have had.

Abraham_Lincoln_2We once had a separate day to honor each of these Presidents on their birthdays. Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and George Washington on February 22. In elementary school as a youngster, I remember fondly these days, these were important birthdays, and these great men were not only honored, but discussed and taught about.

But there became such a clamoring for a holiday to honor Martin Luther King that something had to be done. The calendar was just too crowded in February to have an additional holiday. It was decided to combine the two presidents on to one Presidents Day and honor both George and Abraham on the same day, and then to add a Martin Luther King Day to honor him.

Now that day has become known as Civil Rights Day in many locations. By doing that citizens can remember George and Abe and have a longer weekend for their partying, since Presidents Day is always on a Monday. However, we seem to have forgotten George and Abe and what they stood for. Honesty, character, integrity.
But you can still think about and talk about these two great leaders and their lives. Remember them on this, the day to honor them. You can learn more about them—especially George, in my book: “Founding Fathers—Uncommon Heroes.”

HAPPY PRESIDENTS DAY!!
