C. S. Lewis and Christianity

445192825_011af775a5_mMost people know C. S. Lewis as the author of “The Chronicles of Narnia” and that he wrote some other stuff about Christianity. But few know that he was at first an atheist. Through experiences in his life he became a Christian.

He wanted others to be able to find the same things he did, so he held a series of radio broadcasts in 1942 to 1944 about the Christian Faith he had by then endorsed. These speeches were gathered into a book titled “Mere Christianity.” It was addressed to people at war, and contains some amazing insights.

The problem, C. S. Lewis insists, is us. And the crooked and perverse generation of which the psalmists and prophets spoke many years ago about is our own. I think he would say we are even closer now to the times the prophets were warning about.

I had intended to read some of his other works, including “Mere Christianity” for some time. Then I came across a copy of “Mere Christianity” on my own bookshelf.

Apparently I had purchased it some time before, placed it in my bookshelf and forgotten about it. The receipt inside the book, indicates it was purchased in August of 2011. So now I decided I would read it. It is most interesting. I believe our Founding Fathers would have liked this book. And it does seem to apply to our day!

Here are a couple of sentences from the Foreword of the book:

“The ‘mere’ Christianity of C. S. Lewis is not a philosophy or even a theology that may be considered, argued, and put away in a book on a shelf. It is a way of life, one that challenges us always to remember, as Lewis once stated, that ‘there are no ordinary people’ and that ‘it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit.’ Once we tune ourselves to this reality, Lewis believes, we open ourselves to imaginatively transform our lives in such a way that evil diminishes and good prevails. It is what Christ asked of us in taking on our humanity, sanctifying our flesh, and asking us in turn to reveal God to one another.”

In future blogs I intend to reveal a few more interesting insights. Stay tuned!
