Abraham Lincoln was one for corny jokes. Or of just plain joking about some corny or crazy situations. For example, one day two young men were having a quarrel. It looked to everyone that it may eventually become serious.
Lincoln, who was considered by those who knew, him to be a fair minded individual, and a man with a penchant for fairness, was chosen to mediate the dispute.
One of the men who had been involved in the argument, and was defeated by Abe’s decision, then threatened Lincoln outright. Abe was much taller than the man who made the threat. Again, he just wanted to be a peacemaker.
“See here, Lanky, I’ll lick you,” shouted the loser.
Lincoln looked down upon the shorter man, and with a smile said: “All right. But let’s fight fair. You are so small there isn’t much of you for me to hit, but I’m so big, you can’t help hitting me. So you make a chalk mark on me that will show just your size. When we fight, you must be sure to hit me inside this mark or it won’t be fair.”
Of course the whole idea was so silly, even ridiculous, that the smaller bully actually began to laugh. So the whole quarrel ended up as a joke!
