Founding Fathers and Our Election

Wow. It has certainly been a week of surprises and unusual political events for our Presidential Candidates!

Between all the lying, immorality, deceit, and downright stupidity on both sides, we, the electorate have seen more than ever before in an upcoming election. It’s almost beyond our understanding and comprehension. How did we ever get here?

I guess it is to be expected with the grand prize that is being fought over. When you think of the Clintons being broke when they left the White House and now they are worth more than half a billion dollars. Even a very wealthy businessman is fighting for the prize.

Landsdowne paintingGeorge Washington didn’t even want the miseries of being the first President. He was elected unanimously, not once but twice. The people knew him, and knew he could be trusted. He refused to serve a third term, against popular encouragement.

When John Adams was elected to replace Washington, George said something like “I wonder who’ll be the happiest, me going out or John coming in?”

Now our elections have become a dogfight, or worse. But this season it just seems to be much worse than ever. How could we ever get a man like George Washington to even consider running for President today?
